Elizabeth Warren reportedly seeking donations in expectation of crypto challenger

US Senator Elizabeth Warren is reportedly seeking donations to prepare for a possible challenge to her Senate seat, FOX Business’ Eleanor Terrett said on Feb. 19.

In an email obtained by Terrett, Warren wrote:

“New reporting … indicates that I officially have a Republican challenger considering running against me for Senate in Massachussets.”

Warren’s email cites an earlier report from the Boston Globe suggesting that crypto lawyer John Deaton intends to run against her and win her senate seat. Without naming Deaton explicitly, Warren’s letter warns that her challenger is a “big cheerleader for crypto interest.”

Warren, by contrast, has historically advocated for anti-crypto regulation called The Digital Asset Anti-Money Laundering Act and criticized the role of crypto in tax evasion, terrorist financing, the drug trade, and sanctions evasion. In the latest email, she said that her opposition to crypto scams and support for crypto regulations has led the crypto lobby to “put a target on [her] back.”

Warren is reportedly seeking donations

Terrett otherwise noted that Warren is “rallying her donor base” in response to the challenge.

One section of Warren’s email reads:

“… This now means we need to prepare to compete against funding from powerful special interests, Wall Street, and the GOP [the Republican Party]. So can you please rush a donation of $28 or anything you can to my re-election campaign so I can keep fighting in the Senate?”

Warren’s email suggests that Deaton is prepared to initially fund his campaign with $500,000 of his own funding. Meanwhile, the Boston Globe reported that Warren raised $850,000 for her own re-election campaign in the last quarter of 2023. The Boston Globe additionally suggested that the race could stall Warren’s campaign and fundraising efforts without an actual Republican victory.

Terrett obtained Warren’s email from an unknown source, and as such, it is unverified by CyptoRanking. Warren has not publicly issued a statement requesting donations for the above reasons. Her official website does, however, accept donations in general.
