OpenAI developing tool with 99% accuracy in detecting AI-generated images

OpenAI is working on a tool boasting 99% reliability for detecting AI-generated images, Bloomberg reported on Oct. 18.

Mira Murati, OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer, mentioned that the tool is in the internal testing phase, with no specific release date confirmed.

OpenAI has yet to respond to CryptoSlate’s request for comment as of press time.

This year, the proliferation of AI companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Midjourney, and others has brought AI-generated content into the spotlight. These companies enable users to create convincing fake text, images, and audio effortlessly, generating humorous and concerning outcomes.

For instance, they’ve given rise to light-hearted creations like an image of Pope Francis donning a custom Papal puffer coat in the style of Balenciaga. However, they’ve also been abused, resulting in substantial financial losses, as seen in the viral but false image of an explosion at the Pentagon.

In response to these challenges, there’s a growing demand for new tools to help internet users identify AI-generated images, audio, and text. OpenAI’s previous attempt to develop tools that could detect AI-generated content failed because the product was found to be “unreliable.”

OpenAI reintroduces “Browse with Bing” feature.

In a separate development, the AI-focused company has brought its “Browse with Bing” feature out of Beta to all its subscribers, according to an Oct. 17 update from the firm.

It said:

“ChatGPT can now browse the internet to provide you with current and authoritative information, complete with direct links to sources. It is no longer limited to data before September 2021.”

Earlier in the year, the firm had introduced the feature but abruptly shelved it in June after it was discovered that ChatGPT could display paywalled content.

However, after extensive work in its beta mode, the company has reworked ChatGPT to follow instructions provided by the websites.

OpenAI added:

“Plus and Enterprise users no longer need to switch the beta toggle to use browse, and are able to choose “Browse with Bing” from the GPT-4 model selector.”
